Timothy A. Stewart, PhD
Vice President, Research
Dr. Stewart was appointed Vice President, Research at DiObex in November 2004. Dr. Stewart was one of a small group of scientists promoted to the coveted Staff Scientist position at Genentech, Inc. where he was also Director of Endocrine Research. In this position he led multiple drug discovery groups investigating the causes, and the potential cures, of diabetes, obesity, and the complications associated with diabetes. Under his leadership, four drug candidates were brought to a development decision.
Dr. Stewart was a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Institute for Cancer Research (Fox Chase, Philadelphia), where he developed the technology that allowed the transfer of novel genes to mice (transgenic mice) and at Harvard Medical School, where he collaborated on the development of the 'Oncomouse'. The patents covering these mice were the first ever awarded for the protection of novel mammals and plaques noting these patents are now on the wall of the U.S. Patent Office alongside those recognizing Alexander Graham Bell and the Wright Brothers.
Dr. Stewart has published extensively on the molecular biology and physiology of growth regulation, glucose homeostasis and metabolic control. He holds a PhD in BioChemistry from the University of Otago (New Zealand) and was a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Institute for Cancer Research (Fox Chase, Philadelphia) and at Harvard Medical School.
